The increased demand for connectivity and 5G network-enabled IoT solutions is causing technology providers, telcos, agenceis to rush to be first to market, clamoring for dominance in a relatively new, untapped market. This wave of competition may push some orgnisations to sacrifice security testing for speed, allowing potential vulnerabilities to remain hidden in the entire value chain of 5G, network and IoT.

The explosion in new use cases alone is enough to increase the risks associated with 5G. However, if the increased emphasis is paid to understanding these and other risks and in addressing them, 5G adoption will be a much smoother and faster affair. The inherent complexity in securing 5G itself is a big factor that limits our ability to understand these risks and this factor presents a signifcant barrier to cross.

Reliance on untrusted entities, integration with existing networks, design issues, vulnerabilities from previous generations are all sources of vulnerabilities that have been identified. Mass adoption will expose other vulnerabilities.
